1st & 2nd Class

Summer Term

The summer term is shaping up to be a busy one. We are sorry to see the end of Music Generation in our room. We have enjoyed learning from Anna and having fun through music. We are enjoying GAA coaching each Friday with Darragh and learning lots of new skills with him. We are continuing to enjoy doing lots of art each week, watercolour painting, bees and even racing cars! We planted our own sunflowers. We used the iPads to create a book during Book Week and dressed up as our favourite characters. The weather is improving and we got to enjoy learning table tennis with our fabulous new tables. Not sure we'll be ready for the Olympics, but we'll do our best!

What a busy time we have doing Art!!

March was incredibly busy with Mothers' Day, St. Patrick's Day, Seachtain na Gaeilge and Easter all rolling in together. Have a look at some of the art we completed during that time.

Pancake Tuesday - YUM!!

The Theme of Wind... As part of our Green Flag work for Global Citizenship - Energy, we looked at wind energy. We considered all the ways in which we use wind energy to our advantage and made our own wind socks. Not sure how they'd survive some of the stormy weather we've been having though!!

Music & Dance

We have been having a wonderful time with Anna from Music Generation, singing and doing action songs as well as learning about various composers and instruments. Anna played for us as we watched our very own star show off her fabulous dancing skills. Ms. Ní Bhroin helped with the music too.

The Snow Fell and We Got Creative...

On a very cold and snowy day in January, we decided to reflect the weather in our artwork. Have a look at the snow globes we made. Stunning!!

Who loves Hot Chocolate with cream and marshmallows?

Check out some of the amazing artwork for Christmas...

Our Very Own Toy Show!

We decided that we didn't need Ryan Tubridy or Patrick Kielty in our school to have fun at our very own Toy Show to mark the start of the Christmas build up. Have a look at the toys the children presented to the class. There was time to play too!

Our Active Walkway

We are so lucky to have such space around our school to enjoy. On our Active Walkway we skipped, hopped and crawled! Most importantly, we had fun!!

MUSIC IN THE CLASSROOM

Music always brings light and energy into the classroom. We danced to music, practiced making the treble clef and enjoyed playing tunes with the Boomwhackers as part of our Music Generation programme.

Plenty more art...

Our Easter Bonnet Parade

A Very Busy March!

We started the month looking at all the new life around us, especially farm animals. We created our own farm with lots of animals to look after.

We were feeling a bit chilly, so we reminded ourselves of the lovely hot chocolates to keep us warm.

We came up with ideas and advice as to how we could stay healthy for the months ahead..great advice for us all.

Some children dressed up for World Book Day and we had great fun reading in groups and with our friends. Some of the 4th Class read their books they had written. Well done to all our authors!

For Seachtain na Gaeilge we learned some Irish dancing, Irish songs and poems and of course, some art to celebrate!

We also took time to think about our mums and how hard they work to take such amazing care of us. Thank you to all the Mums, Grannies and Aunties who love us so much.

Phew! A busy month for sure!!

Feeling the Love!!

The children in the middle room all got involved in our procedural writing activity and then went on to make delicious buns for the whole school. Even the teachers got to enjoy some of the treats! Lots of budding chefs in the room! Watch out Neven Maguire!!

We also created heartfelt greetings for a loved one for Valentine's Day.

Environmental Workshop

The children in the middle room took part in an online workshop called "Environment, the Musical" with a lovely lady from Donegal called Annette McNelis. She got us up on our feet singing and dancing to songs she wrote herself, teaching us how to care for the environment around us. We learned that we all have an active role in helping to protect our environment. The favourite song seemed to be the "Dog Poo Song"!

Hallowe'en

There was Hallowe'en art, a disco and dressing up on the agenda. See if you can work out who all the characters are in our room...

The Bronze Age

The children in the Middle Room learned about the Bronze Age. They discovered what a Fulacht Fia was and how the meat was cooked. They learned about crannogs and how the thatched homes were built using wattle and daub. The children were split into two groups, each group building their own house on a crannog. Have a look at their work.

Welcome to a New School Year!

As we settled back into the school routines for a new school year, we got busy with art, music and PE. The children designed their own name using creative lines and colour. Beautiful work!

In music, the children used symbols to compose. They then performed their own composition. Watch out Mozart!

In PE, the children worked hard on the skill of catching. Great fun was had and the weather allowed us outside each week.

Chalk Art
We finally got the good weather and took advantage!

Chocolate Treats!

The children in the middle room made Rice Krispy buns for all the children in the school. It was great to work as teams and all get involved! Not even one was left uneaten!

Let's Go Sailing!

In Science/Art, we had to design our own boat and make sure it wasn't going to sink or capsize. The children worked in groups and planned carefully together. They considered the materials needed and sketched what they hoped their boat would look like. Next was making the boat. It was tricky but in the end, there were boats ready for the water. Well done to all the groups as we had none sinking or capsizing!

Planting Our Runner Beans!

We planted runner beans in jam jars and watched their progress. Within 10 days we had roots and shoots appearing. Everyone brought theirs home when the shoots got higher - ready for planting in a bigger pot or in the garden. Lots of delicious runner beans to look forward to in our dinner before too long! We planted cress seeds also, some in soil and some on kitchen roll in trays. Yum!

Happy Easter!

We made our own nests from newspaper and moss. We added our little chicks and a few treats! We grew hair using grass seed for our little bunnies.

Creating a Bubble Bomb!

2nd Class had great fun creating bubble bombs. This was an activity in their English workbooks and they discovered what happened when they mixed vinegar, bread soda and warm water. We had a few small explosions!!

A Busy March!

Have a look at some of our art for St. Patrick's Day and Mothers' Day. We dressed in green to celebrate St. Patrick's Day as well as the fantastic news that we have been awarded our next Green Flag for Global Citizenship - Litter and Waste. We took our classroom outside and drew our big tree as we studied the bark, the various holes and characteristics of it.

Our Cherry Blossoms

World Book Day 2022

World Book Day was celebrated on March 3rd this year. Some of our children dressed up as some of their favourite characters. Teacher brought it a lot of books from her house and we had plenty of time to read them and to share our books with our friends in our group. See if you can spot some familiar characters!

Science and Maths in our Classroom

2nd and 3rd Classes were learning about 3D shapes. We looked at the number of edges, faces and corners the 3D shapes have and then we created our own 3D shapes using playdough and matchsticks. Some of our shapes collapsed on us, but we had great fun.

In Science, 1st Class looked at the topic of sound. We listened for loud, soft, high and low sounds. We went on to make earmuffs to block out sounds. Many tried to block out the teacher talking to them!!

Our Project on Spain

Everyone took part in our project on Spain. 1st Class made Spanish flags and filled out fact files on Spain. 2nd and 3rd Class researched Spain on the iPads. Ms. Sherlock showed us some photos from festivals in Spain and even taught us a few simple phrases in Spanish. We learned lots about the country and the culture. Have a look!

Fair Trade

We discovered what Fair Trade meant and learned to recognise the symbol. We went home and looked in our cupboards to see if we had any Fair Trade produce at home. We brought in wrappers of Fair Trade products for display in the classroom. We used atlases to discover where many of the products were farmed around the world. We watched how cocoa was farmed and were delighted to learn that Cadbury's chocolate supports Fair Trade. We can happily eat it knowing that we are helping give farmers in the developing world a better deal. Mrs. McNulty can continue to drink her coffee while also supporting Fair Trade.

Spring in our Classroom
We practiced our fractions using Lego, making our own fraction walls of 1 whole, 1/2 and 1/4. We used the iPads to research the country of Spain for a mini-project. We learned lots about Spain and even did some Flamenco dancing! For Valentine's Day, we made Love Bugs for our loved ones. We did some Pyramid poems. Look too at our ice-skating! In Stations, some of the class practiced letter formation using Playdough....quite tricky but it helps us learn our letters better.

Let it Snow!

In the absence of real snow, we made our own snowflakes....not as cold to handle!!

December

December arrived very quickly this year and we got to work on making some festive decorations.

We had an Active Advent Calendar. This meant that each day, a child got to pick a bag from the line, got a little gift and we all had an activity to do. A great way of keeping us fit and active throughout each day!

Happy Thanksgiving 2021!

Science Galore!

Pupils learned about colours, mixing them and separating them. We had painted colour wheels and then carried out experiments with filter paper, water and markers.

Static electricity was created using balloons. This proved great fun as crazy hairstyles became the norm in the classroom for the afternoon!

Some More Art

Science Week

During Science Week, we learned all about our digestive systems. New vocabulary was learned; saliva, digestion, oesophagus, chyme, gall bladder, enzymes, small intestines, large intestines, bile, rectum and anus. There were lots of laughs, giggles and disgusted faces! We used a fantastic science pack to help us as we investigated the journey our food goes on through our bodies.

Hallowe'en Fun

We had great fun at Hallowe'en dressing up and trying to scare the teachers! Such creativity with the face painting and costume design. See if you can spot some characters! Lots of art was done also. Chalk pastels were used to create our pictures - messy but fun! We did great Hallowe'en themed PE too. Have a look at our Active page to see photos from that.

Some of Our Art

We learned about the skeleton in Science and the importance of keeping our bones strong and healthy. We made our own skeletons using cotton buds.

We took a line for a walk and created crazy patterns. We made some very cute scarecrows using toilet roll inserts .... not sure they will scare anything away!

Nature Walk

We took advantage of the beautiful September weather and went on a nature walk around the school grounds. We spotted lots of spiders, creepy crawlies and even some blackberries. Delicious when ripe!

Bee Happy!

In our collaborative art, we created a huge bee and what a colourful bee it is! Hopefully we can help protect our bees and keep colour like this in our gardens.

Free Art!

One week, the teacher got us to be creative and do free art. We got to choose what we wanted to draw and create. Have a look at how imaginative we all were.

Time for the Beach!

As summer approached, we decided it was time to bring the beach to our classroom. Have a look at our warm blue skies, the sandy beach and our calm water as we admired the lighthouses bringing us safely in.

Wall Hangings

Mrs. McNulty had lots of fur fabric in her attic. We used it to create wall hangings. They were so fluffy and I hope they enjoy their new homes on the walls of our homes. We had a great selection of animals and aliens!

Stations

Each week we have English stations in our room. There is a writing station, a reading station, an oral work station, a free writing station and an iPad station. We have continued to use Seesaw throughout the year. We had used it during Lockdown earlier this year, so we are very familiar with it now! Stations have been a little different this year due to Covid restrictions, but we love them each week!

Music in Our Classroom

We were introduced to the Treble Clef and the stave. We learned the notes on the stave and even composed our own tunes. It was great fun and we got to perform our original compositions using a variety of instruments. Who will be the next Beethoven among us I wonder?

More Art!

We drew pictures while learning about perspective. What colourful streets we live on!

Medieval Times

In history we studied life in Medieval Times. There were gruesome tales of so-called entertainment and various punishments for crimes committed. We looked at the Medieval cities of Kilkenny and Prague. We learned about the awful plague called the Black Death. We designed posters warning people of the dangers of it, thinking also about the current pandemic in our world. Watch out for the symptoms!

Matchstick Art

Matchsticks of all colours were used in our Matchstick Art - what do you think?

A Summer Sunset

We dreamed of sunny days and stunning sunsets as we headed off in our hot-air balloons!

Weaving

We completed some weaving as part of our fabric and fibre strand in art. It was tricky as we used fabric strips and ribbon. Such fantastic colours! We even did some weaving outside!

P.E. Skills

We do 1 hour of P.E. each week. We learn lots of fundamental movement skills; throwing, catching, running, bouncing, balancing and jumping, to name a few. We play lots of games too such as rounders and basketball. We dance and do orienteering activities. We certainly are active! Have a look at our Active Flag page for even more photos!

How Much Rain do we Get?

We looked at rainfall and the water cycle. Using empty water bottles and pebbles, we made our own rain gauges. Doing the markings was tricky to make sure they were accurate. We left them outside and collected lots of rain!

Easter Egg Hunt

We watched the weather carefully and in between showers of sleet and snow and hail, the Easter Bunny managed to hide lots of little eggs for us to find. Yum!!

Bubble Bomb!

While working on procedural writing in English, we followed instructions to make a bubble bomb! Perfectly safe but could have been a bit messy for indoors, so we took it outside. We used vinegar, bread soda, warm water, kitchen roll and zip-lock bags. We watched carefully to wait for the POP!

Mothers' Day

We made flower pots with tulips for our very special Mums as a way of showing love and appreciation on Mothers' Day. We hope all the Mums liked them and had a great day.

We're back!!

We got back to school on the 1st of September after our long time away from the classroom. It was fantastic to get back and see everyone again. Any nerves on the first few days quickly disappeared as we got used to the routine of school once more, while keeping safe in our pods and bubbles. We were in temporary accommodation in the Teeling Centre for 2 months while we got new en-suite toilets installed in our school. Safety and wellbeing were the focus for the month of September as we settled in.

Covid-19 Closures

On the 12th of March, with little or no warning, we were told all our schools were closing for 2 weeks to help curb the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19). The 2 weeks extended to the end of the school year. Learning was happening at home and parents had to take charge and support their children as the teachers sent work and activities home for the children to complete. We discovered what Zoom was. Packs of activities came in the post from Mrs. McNulty for us to enjoy. It was unchartered territory for all as we tried to keep in touch with each other. Everyone rose to the challenges and managed to enjoy the beautiful weather we were blessed with. This has been a truly historic year - we will be telling the future generations about the strange experience.
