Hockey coaching

Over the next 6 weeks coach Graham, from Sligo Sports Partnership, will be here every Wednesday to do hockey training. Hockey is a new sport for many of us and we're excited to see how it goes. This is one of the activities supported by our parents' association.

Olympic Movement Breaks

Starting in the middle of November, we took part in the Olympic Movement Breaks for 4 weeks. The children really enjoyed getting to know the Olympians who demonstrated the exercises in the daily videos. The wide range of sports and challenges kept everyone on their toes!

Tennis Coaching

In partnership with Youth Sport West, we have started four weeks of tennis coaching with Daire. Each child has the opportunity to learn and develop new skills from week to week. Some children may even decide to spend a few minutes in the evening playing tennis on their local tennis court. Have a look at some of today's pictures with very mixed weather conditions!

Meet our

Active School Flag Committee

To help us decide how to pick our Active School Flag committee members we asked the children why they would like to be on the Active Flag Committee.

I want to make a difference in the school so it becomes a more active school.

I want to help people become more active.

I would like to help people keep fit.

I like being outside and I spend very little time on technology.

I believe that you have to stay fit to be healthy.

I think people should be more active inside and outside of school.

Physical Education is my favourite subject and I love it more when it's outside.

I would like to be more involved with my classmates.

Our Active School Flag Slogan

'Jump, skip, run and play,

We will exercise every day!'

We had a poster competition and here are the winners!

Playground Leaders

2018-2019

For 8 weeks, the playground leaders taught playground games to all the children in the school e.g. Donkey, Ship Sea Shore, Fruit Basket and Simon Says. A new game was taught each week!

The playground leaders taught the game to Junior & Senior Infants on a Monday during little break (10 minutes). They taught the game to 1st & 2nd class on Tuesday, 3rd & 4th class on Wednesday and 5th & 6th class on Thursday. On a Friday, the playground leaders were available to play the game with anyone that wanted to!

There were 6 playground leaders: 3 groups of 2 playground leaders. The groups alternated each day.

Playground Leaders

2019-2020

This school year, we decided to do the playground leaders a little differently!

On a Thursday, during big lunch, the whole school engages in playground games for 15 minutes.

All 5th & 6th class children are playground leaders. There are two playground leaders per class. Each class is taught a different playground game on a Thursday. Each week the games are rotated. So every class plays a new game each week.

This is working much better than last year and the children are enjoying learning new games that can be played during breaks.

What club are you in

survey

In February (2020), we carried out a 'What Club Are You In?' survey. The senior pupils in Mrs. Bourke's room compiled a list of sports/clubs in our local area. This survey was carried out by asking all pupils in the school if they participated in a particular sport/activity. The children were then asked if they participated in any sport not mentioned on the list and it was then added to list. E.g. kung fu and gymnastics were not on the original list.

Some senior pupils helped compile the results and created a block graph to show the results. 2 members of the committee shared the results with all the children during an assembly. The graph is displayed on the notice board in GP room. As you can see swimming is a very popular activity in our school! It was fantastic to see the variety of sports and physical activities our pupils take part in.

21 Day Active Challenge

The children from Junior Infants to 2nd class took part in a very fun initiative from the Sligo Sports Partnership called the 21 Day Physical Activity Challenge. The children were given activity sheets to complete as they became physically active for a minimum of 60 minutes every day. Lots of ideas were on these sheets, such as games, fitness circuits, obstacle course, yoga etc. Parents and children all enjoyed this challenge and had great fun completing many of the suggested fitness activities, or doing their own fitness activity. The challenge charts were sent in to the Sligo Sports Partnership office on completion of the 21 days. We were very proud of all our children who participated, but were especially delighted when a boy in the Junior room, Troy, won a prize of equipment for egg and spoon races and sack races for our school!! We will have great fun using those in the summer term as we get ready for our Sports Day!
