Art Work on our theme by 1st & 2nd Class

Some of our Project work for Global Citizenship - Energy

3rd & 4th Class did fabulous images of ways we can use energy wisely. 1st & 2nd Class did a poster competition about being Green in the way we live - how to save energy. All the children from 1st to 6th completed a survey of our Global Connections. Well done to all.

Energy Day of Action!

We held our day of Action in January with a fantastic visit from Ingrid from the Organic Centre in Rossinver, Co Leitrim. She held a workshop with the Junior half of the school where the children learned about solar, wind, gas and water energy. There was a dancing solar chicken, and exploding lid, a jumping monkey and even a chance to dress up and explore the benefits of weather on growth of plants. Guzzler even paid us a visit.

In the senior classes, the children also learned about energy and how we can use it and conserve it to help our world.

Workshop on Marine Biology

We had 2 fabulous workshops on the biology of our oceans with David from the Marine Institute , where we learned about the various zones of the oceans and the life in each of those layers. It was fascinating to hear how sea creatures have adapted to their environment. We must do everything in our power to protect our oceans and the creatures living in them by keeping our world litter free and safe for them.

Picker Pals

As part of our work on Litter and Waster the Junior Room have been taking part in the Picker Pals programme. Every weekend someone gets to bring home the Picker Pal pack and go on a Picker Pal adventure to clean up our world . Check out some of our adventures below.

Fairtrade

The Senior Room have been learning about Fairtrade. They particularly enjoyed following the journey of chocolate and creating recipes for some tasty chocolate treats. Check out some photos of our work below.

Fairtrade

The pupils in the middle room learned about Fairtrade and how we can help farmers in developing countries by looking at what we buy. We were amazed by how many products we found that had the Fairtrade symbol or supported Fairtrade. Cadburys chocolate, being very popular, has the Cocoa Life logo and partners with Fairtrade. We looked at how cocoa is farmed for the production of chocolate. We studied maps and found some of the countries producing much of the Fairtrade produce. Now we can recognise the Fairtrade logo and know we are helping others by buying Fairtrade produce.

Action Day - Global Citizenship Litter and Waste

For our Global Citizenship Litter and Waste Action Day we hosted our first ever Multi-Cultural Day here at St. Paul’s. It went wonderfully! Thank you to all the parents who prepared presentations and lots of delicious food, the day wouldn’t have went so successfully without you! It was a fantastic insight to the variety of cultures we have in our school today.

To start our Multi-cultural Day, we had a parent talk about her home country of Lithuania. She showed us a beautiful slide-show of pictures of the country while also telling us some interesting facts. For example, Lithuania is the only country in the world with its own official scent! Also, amber is referred to the gold of Lithuania and is used to make beautiful jewellery and pictures (some of which we got to see!).

Then, we got to taste some delicious Syrian food – chicken & rice – the flavours...mmm!!! Up next was France, this parent told us all about France – the population, names of cities, famous foods. She told us stories about her Grandad which were very interesting.

Next presentation – Poland! We have 3 Polish families in our school and they came together to make a presentation for us. We learned that Polish is 1 of the most difficult languages to learn and that Poland has the oldest forest in Europe! We got to see a child’s traditional Polish outfit and one of our Junior Infant pupils even got to try it on.

After little break, we tucked in to some delicious foods! To start, we had some Indian food – curries, rice, onion bhajis and much more! Then we got to taste some tasty, traditional Lithuanian and Polish food.

After lunch, we had a parent talk about America. We tried some root beer and candy corns! The jury is still out on those.....! To finish our day, we had 2 children tell us about the countries they are from (or their parents are from) – Czech Republic & South Africa. It was lovely to hear things about these places from the children themselves!

Well done to everyone involved and a heartfelt thanks from all the staff and children at St. Paul’s N.S.! Our Action Day really increased our awareness of Global Citizenship.

Biodiversity Action Day

Martina Butler visited St. Paul's N.S. for our Biodiversity Action Day! We had lots of fun looking around the school at all the nature. We became nature detectives when we went to find specific flowers. We then looked at some of the trees. We were able to identify each of the trees by looking at their leaves. Finally, we got to go on a mini-beast hunt. We found lots of interesting creepy crawlies!
