The Junior Classroom
The Polar Regions
The snow in January arrived just at the right time as we began learning about the polar regions. We enjoyed our role play areas as explorers, built igloos out of various materials, read the books Tom Crean's Rabbit and Lost and Found and got creative creating chalk pictures of the Northern Lights.
Space
We had great fun learning about space and our interest was heightened by the recent Artemis mission which we watched videos of. We had a spaceship and space station role play area, we made planets by mixing paint colours and came up with many ways to make spaceships, planets and aliens using playdough, Lego, construction toys and 2D shapes.
We also enjoyed reading the stories Whatever Next and Aliens Love Underpants.
Summer
Exciting post arrived in June when we found out that we had been awarded Gold Status for the Incredible Edibles project. We really enjoyed this projected and seeing our seeds sprout and grow was definitely a highlight.
We also got outside as much as we could this term and when the weather allowed we had lunch on the picnic tables and brought Aistear outdoors to play in the sand, with the outdoor kitchen and to build with the large shapes.
School Tour 2022
We headed off to the Knocknarea Arena to the Let's Go School Tour on Thursday 26th May. There was great excitement as we boarded the bus. We enjoyed an action packed day including air jumpers, team games, bouncy castles, wobbly ladders and obstacle courses.
Ag Sugradh le Chéile
Junior and Senior Infants and their parents enjoyed a morning of fun and games completing an Ag Sugradh le Chéile workshop with Kate from Sligo Sports Partnership. We have loads of ideas for games to play at home now.

Spring
We have been watching out for signs of spring, making spring flowers from playdough, Lego and blocks and learning about the lifecycle of the frog. For Valentine's Day we created some love bugs and we also enjoyed printing with vegetables this month. A highlight was making jelly to explore the effects of heating and cooling in Science. Of course we enjoyed a nice bowl once it set with some sprinkles on top!
Hot Chocolate ... yum!
December
We have had an action packed December!
We began by learning about 2D shapes and enjoyed making them from playdough and going for a shape hunt in the school playground. We also took part in a Zoom call with the DSPCA and learned about caring for animals and our environment. The we opened our classroom Post Office as part of Aistear. We have had great fun writing Christmas cards and letters and sending them to our friends. You might also spot some of our festive art and playdough!
Science Week 2021
I spy...an Opticans!
We had great fun learning all about our eyes and sense of sight by playing in the opticians role play area, making glasses in Playdough and miniature opticians from Lego and in the Small World area.
Materials Hunt
We have been learning about different materials and today we went on a materials hunt. We found glass in the windows, wood in our new picnic tables, plastic on our outside kitchen and metal on the basketball hoops among other things. We enjoyed getting outside and working collaboratively.
