Active School Week
29th May - 2nd June 2023

Day 1

Football Skills with Mr McSharry
To begin active week, we had lots of fun developing our football skills. The children were split into groups to complete passing drills, stopping the ball and shooting drills.

Day 2

Tennis with  Coach Daire
On Tuesday we had our last session with Coach Daire. Thanks to the PTA, Daire has been working with us every Tuesday for the past 4 weeks. The children have been striking with an implement, serving the ball, developing their forehand and backhand passing and maintaining a rally across the net.

Day 3

Sponsored Walk
On Wednesday we had our sponsored walk at the GAA pitch. Thanks to Trevor and Owenmore Gaels for the use of the pitch. In the very warm weather, with everyone wearing the high vis jackets, we managed to walk a total of 5 km (10 laps of the pitch). Thank you to everyone who sponsored us. There were some tired feet when we got back to St. Paul's!

Day 4

Active Stations
On Thursday our 5th and 6th class pupils designed 9 active stations for each classroom to enjoy. In groups, the children had 3 minutes at each station where the senior boys and girls demonstrated the activities. Lots of throwing, catching, kicking, balancing, striking with an implement and jumping skills were practised!

Sports Day
On Friday we had our Sports Day. The four teams did their very best in every race, with only 7 points between 1st and 4th place.

Well done to everyone for taking part, including our preschool children! Thank you to parents for helping with scores, organising children, refreshments, and being fantastic supporters! Have a look at some of the photographs from the day.

Active HOME Week

18th - 24th May 2020

We had hoped that this years Active School Week would take place from the 27th April - 1st May. However, because of Covid-19 it was not possible for this to go ahead so we invited parents and children to participate in the ‘Active HOME Week’ challenge instead.

To complete the challenge children had to find four different ways of being active every day making sure that it added up to 60 minutes, or more. Children were encouraged to try something NEW, have FUN with their family and to ENJOY the week! Each day during Active Home Week, Ms. Browne, our Active School Flag Co-ordinator, provided 4 activity suggestions. The teachers also shared some pictures of what they were doing to stay active during Active Home Week.

We had a great response to Active Home Week and had 41 children participate in Active Home Week and sent us pictures of their activities and adventures! We had 33 children send us their challenge charts. We got great feedback and many families decided that they would try to keep it up!

Active School Week
14th - 18th June 2021

Day 1: Monday 14th June

To begin our Active School Week, we had Coach Sarah do some dancing with us. Each classroom had an hour dance lesson with Coach Sarah and had lots of fun dancing to songs such as 'Dynamite (kidz bop version)'. 5th and 6th class in particular really enjoyed choreographing a dance to this song.

Day 2: Tuesday 15th June

Today we had Coach Daithi do some multi-sport with us! To begin, he got us all warmed up! Unfortunately, it was a slightly wetter day today but we made the most of being outside in the fresh air! The rain didn't stop us from enjoying our lesson with Coach Daithi. We did a variety of activities....relays, dodgeball, basketball and find the leader to name a few.

Day 3: Wednesday 16th June

Today we used our new walkway! We picked one of the activities from the Active Flag walkway ideas booklet. It is a wonderful resource and we can not wait to try some more of the activities.

The activity was 'Activity 10: Fundamental Movement Skills'. In pairs or small groups, the children moved between the control points using either the travelling actions or the upper body movements that were listed. Along the way, the children also looked at the control markers for 2 letters and marked the letters on their record sheet. Each pair/group had a different starting point. They had lots of fun moving from control point to control point. The junior room decided to do this as a whole classroom group activity and travelled around the walkway twice!

Day 4: Thursday 17th June

Today was orienteering!

The middle and senior room completed this first activity.

Children worked in small groups to complete todays activity. Each group had a map of a 'funny face'. One at a time, a member from the team ran to the hoop in front of them, picked up 1 piece of equipment and ran to the next hoop. At the second hoop, the children had to study the map carefully and place the piece of equipment in the right place either on or in the hoop. This was repeated until all the pieces of equipment had been used and they had made their funny face! This task proved challenging at the beginning but after making the 6 different funny faces, we had mastered this activity!

Next, the junior and middle room completed an obstacle course. They had to follow the map to make their way through the obstacle course!

Finally, the junior room had great fun using the parachute today to play some games.

Day 5: Friday 18th June

Today, we had visitors from our local GAA club - Owenmore Gaels. We had lots of fun practicing some ball skills.

Active School Week 2022

Active School Week ran from 3rd May to 6th May this year and we had such a busy week. We had coaches from Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and 6th Class pupils keeping us all active. Have a look at what we did each day!

Day 1

The Junior Room had a coach, Kate, who gave all the children and parents lots of games to play together. They played with parachutes, ball and hoops. Such great fun for all and lots of ideas to keep parents and children playing together at home.

Some of our 6th class girls planned and designed stations for our Middle and Senior Room pupils to get them active and practicing lots of skills. They had a penalty shoot out, throwing javelins, basketball, hopscotch and 2 obstacle courses. They even made some of the activities more challenging for the senior classes by adding in a balance walk! Well done girls and thank you. It was fantastic fun!

Day 2

We had a coach, Daithí to work with all the classes on obstacle courses. We had to practice throwing, hopping, running and teamwork.

Active Homework

Each night during Active Week, the children had activities to complete. They could choose what activities they completed each night and coloured the chosen activities completed each night a different colour. This proved very popular, much more enjoyable than the normal Maths or English homework!! Have a look at some of the activities completed!

Day 3

Our 6 week programme of Olympic Handball continued with Coach Evan. We developed our skills further and learned that we can only take 3 steps with the ball before bouncing or passing. A very competitive sport at times!
